With Andrea Nahles at helm, SPD in Bundestag wants to recover from its historic electoral camp. The 47-year-old former Minister of Labor was received on Wednesday in Group 137 of 152 votes. 14 deputies voted against Nahles, re was an abstention as announced by participants. This corresponds to an agreement of around 90 percent. This makes Nahles first woman to head SPD Group.
The Nahles, who was assigned to left wing of party, replaced former faction leader, Thomas Oppermann, on proposal of SPD leader Martin Schulz, who had renounced a new candidacy. As a new first parliamentary director, former SPD faction and financial expert Carsten Schneider was elected.
Schneider is counted as right wing of Social Democrats. So far, Christine Lambrecht has held this office. In meantime, current SPD general secretary, Hubertus Heil, had also been in talks. Some SPD members had criticized in past days that Schulz had been pushed forward with staff proposals without first talking to deputies.
